Everyone who has a website wants it to rank high in the search engines like Google and Yahoo.

A higher rank means more visitors, and more visitors mean more sales, or more advertising revenue.

If the phrase(s) you’re trying to rank well for aren’t competitive (that is, few other sites are using the same phrase) then getting good placement is pretty easy: Just put the phrase(s) you want to rank well for in the <title></title> tag and in at least one other area on the page. For some reason this isn’t obvious to everyone: I can’t remember how many times someone has sought my advice about how to rank well for some phrase, and I check out their page and that phrase is nowhere to be found! A while back a friend asked me how to get her homepage to rank well for her name, which was unusual enough that she should have been at the top of Google with no problems. After I checked out her page I felt like asking her, “And it didn’t occur to you to put your name somewhere on that page?!” Actually, her name was on her page, but in a graphic. Google can’t read that, they have no idea what words are contained in an image. And her <title> tag just said “Home”. How is Google supposed to know that her page was about Sally Thunderpizza? (Not her real name.)

So anyway, for non-competitive phrases, just put the phrases you want to rank for in the <title> and in the body copy of your page. For example, you should be able to get to #1 in Google within a month for the phrase martian pudding headache. Go ahead, try it.

Okay, but what if your phrase is competitive? Then you’re going to need to develop some good content for your site, too. Here’s the complete recipe:

Write a <TITLE></TITLE> tag for each page that accurately describes that page (no more than about 64 characters).

Try to create two new pages every week. If you can’t do that, try to do one page each week. At a bare minimum, create a new page each month.

As much as possible, your new pages should be unique, interesting, authoritative, and compelling. If you want to rank well for the phrase electric widgets, then make your site the best resource about electric widgets available.

Make sure all of your pages are accessible through normal <A HREF> links (i.e., don’t use JavaScript or Flash links exclusively).

Link to quality relevant sites. After you do so, ask those sites to link to you, but don’t make your link to them contingent on whether they link back.

Follow standard website design tips and avoid the problems listed on Problem Websites. Your site should be not only attractive, but super-easy to use, and completely free of annoyances.

Most importantly, purge your mind of trying to think of ways you can “trick” your way to the top of the results. Do NOT think about the specific nuts and bolts of how a search engine will rank your pages. Instead, build good, quality pages for your visitors, and trust that the rankings will follow.

But many webmasters don’t get this. They write to me asking such things as:

How many times should my keywords appear on my pages?

What’s the optimum ratio of keywords to non-keywords?

Should I seek links from several PR4 sites or one PR6 site?

Will doing “X” cause me to rank higher?

Such webmasters are missing the point. You get good rankings by building a quality site, not by trying to figure out exactly how the search engines rank pages. It’s counter-intuitive, but you get good rankings by ignoring rankings and focusing on quality. Focus on quality and the rankings will follow. It works the same way in business: If you focus on the money you’ll probably make less money. But if you focus on creating a great customer experience then the money will follow.

But many of you came here hoping to find tricks, so before you dismiss that, consider this: Your site doesn’t rank as well as mine, otherwise you wouldn’t be here. You want your site to rank better, which is why you went looking for this article. And my site does rank well, which is why you found it. In other words, I know what I’m talking about. My sites are all over Google and Yahoo for a variety of popular terms. When I tell you the best way to get good rankings is to ignore rankings and focus on building your site, it’s not just theoretical, and it’s not a cop-out: It works, and it works well.

But maybe you figure that you don’t have time to build a quality site, so that’s why you want some easy tricks. In that case, your site doesn’t deserve to rank well. And don’t be surprised when it doesn’t. If you want better rankings, you must make your site worthy of those rankings. Look at the sites that are beating you. Assuming you already have good <title> tags, is your site truly better than the ones which are beating you? If yes, then you’ll probably outrank them eventually. If not, then why are you even trying to get the search engines to give preferential treatment to an inferior site? Make your site better than the rest, and the rankings will follow.

Algorithm — The long, complicated, secret set of formulas that a search engine uses to figure out where sites should rank.

One problem with using tricks is that the effects are temporary. Put yourself in Google’s shoes: Do you want to list the very best sites or do you want to list the ones that are most adept at employing tricks? Obviously you hate tricksters because when you return a list of crappy sites instead of the very best ones then that reflects poorly on you. So you do everything in your power to weed out the tricksters. As soon as webmasters start using some trick, you change your calculations to ignore that trick. The algorthims are secret, and they’re always changing to boot. (About six changes a week, according to the NY Times.) As a webmaster, obviously your time is better spent making your site better than screwing around playing cat-and-mouse games with the search engines.

Many webmasters also can’t see the forest for the trees. Google wants them to create quality pages which have certain attributes. Many webmasters mistakenly focus on those attributes rather than the quality of the page. Here’s a good analogy: Years ago scientists found that people who ate more fruits and vegetables and less meat and dairy were much healthier and lived longer, and noted that fruits and vegetables are low in fat. The proper response then would be to eat more fruits and vegetables. But instead Americans started eating processed low-fat junk food instead, which didn’t do them any good. Google doesn’t want you to fill your pages with crap in hopes of impressing them, nor do they want you to get links from any and everybody. Google wants you to build a high quality website. Why would they want anything else?

Jill Whalen has a good article about the “stages of understanding” that webmasters go through as they try to learn about search rankings — which usually means that they progressively graduate from one misconception to the next. (read article)

As Google says on its philosophy page, “Focus on the user and all else will follow.” Google wants webmasters to feel the same way — that if you build the best site possible, your good rankings will follow. This isn’t the answer that most webmasters want to hear. They want a few simple “tricks” that will rocket them to the top of the SERPs. Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. Even if that were possible, twenty sites all employing the same tricks couldn’t all fit on the front page of Google.

People seek out my advice about search rankings because they know my sites rank well for a whole host of search phrases. And I promise you I didn’t do anything special beyond what’s listed above. I certainly didn’t worry about keyword density, META tags, submitting my site to the engines, reciprocal link requests, or any other nonsense. I simply tried to build quality sites. In fact, early on I didn’t even consider my search rankings. I just built good sites and then noticed that they ranked well. Really well.

So what attributes does a page need to be considered “quality” by a search engine? The same things it would need to impress most of us, such as:

The page is relevant to the terms being searched for

The page is considered an authority about its topic

Relevancy — How well a page matches a user’s query (more…)

The page has good, useful content

The page has been around for a while

The page is part of a site with lots of information

Keywords — Search terms that a webmaster wants to rank well for. A “keyword” is usually actually a short 2- to 4-word phrase.

The page loads quickly

The page doesn’t have a bunch of broken links

The page isn’t filled with a cheap list of keywords

So ranking well generally means:

Creating many fast-loading, content-rich pages, with the words you want to rank for on the page and in the <TITLE> tag, and

Getting links to your pages from other sites, especially from pages similar in content

Truth be told, that is 90% of it right there. Of course there are more details, and that’s why there’s thirteen pages of explanation that follow, but the summary above is SEO in a nutshell. Honest.

Here’s more about what the engines consider high quality vs. low quality, according to what they recommend in their guidelines.

Good web design in general

Google

Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users, or present different content to search engines than you display to users.

Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you’d feel comfortable explaining what you’ve done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, “Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn’t exist?”

Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

Believe it or not, all SEO’s were newbies at one time or another. Launching a website can be a very exciting event for an individual or new business owner. However, that excitement can quickly turn to disappointment when the site owner finds out that they are getting little or no traffic. If they are getting traffic, it is most likely coming from family members or friends who they notified through an email or Facebook.

Being involved in SEO and marketing in general, I am usually bombarded by family members and friends with questions about marketing their website or their future website on the Internet. Because of this and my willingness to help just about anyone I know, you can usually find me in a small dark corner at a family party (it has to be small and dark because my wife gets ticked when I’m not up and socializing with everyone), on the phone in the car, or answering an email, Facebook message, or Twitter message about SEO and other internet marketing tactics.

I was on a call yesterday with one of my best friends from high school. Our conversation was focused on general search engine optimization principles and link building tactics that could provide a good foundation and hopefully, if he does them right, some strong rankings in the search engines. One thing I emphasized is the fact that what ever he does, he needs to build links naturally. A natural link building campaign is crucial for success in SEO.

A natural link building campaign is one that is just that, natural! Getting 50,000 links within the first twenty days of your website’s existence is definitely not natural. Getting a slow trickle of links coming into your website and then building up looks much more natural. Also, getting 50,000 links pointing to your home page with the same anchor text is not natural. Vary your anchor text and include long tail versions of your keywords. You should also build links to other pages of your site in addition to your home page. All of these things help with building a natural link campaign.

In terms of links, there are two types of links you can get for your websites, external and internal links. Both are very important and can make a huge difference in your search engine rankings. I want to discuss in detail, ten ways to effectively jump-start your link building campaign.

Friends & Family Members

When beginning a link building campaign, one very natural way of obtaining links is from friends and family members. I just opened up our family blog and counted all of the friends and family who we have added in our blogroll. The grand total… 41. How hard is it to simply call up (recommended – it’s more personal) or email your family and friends who have blogs or other sites, and ask them for a link to your new website? Not hard at all! In fact, because they are your friends or family members, they will probably do it without hesitation. You can do the same thing with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.

Add A Blog To Your Domain

Google loves blogs! Google loves fresh content! Google loves internal links! Internal links from other pages of your website are a guaranteed way to help you increase your rankings in the search engines. Adding a blog to your domain is a great way for you to easily add new content to your website on a regular basis. In most cases, adding a blog to your main domain is rather simple and can be done in as little as three clicks of your mouse. Web hosting companies like myhosting.com, Hostmonster, & Bluehost offer one click installations of blog platforms like Wordpress or b2evolution.

Adding a blog, posting to it at least once daily, and linking back to your home page and other important pages of your website with keyword anchor text is a great way to gain a lot of internal links. When blogging, you should also link out to other websites that interest you and websites that are in similar industries. You might also consider adding images, videos, polls, etc. Mix things up! Make it look natural! Most important, have fun!

Local Organizations

Just about every city in the country has a local chamber of commerce; mine would be the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce. Joining a chamber of commerce will not only get you a very good link back to your website, but also provides networking opportunities with other local businesses. Most times, depending on your business, you can generate new leads rather easily by getting to know other individuals and businesses in your area.

Local News

Developing relationships with local newspaper writers and always making yourself available for comments on news stories that involve your industry is a great way to build awareness about your company and get links back to your website (if the newspaper is published online).

Help A Non Profit Organization

You would be surprised how many non-profit organizations are operating in your city and your state. Every one of us has been given talents and certain things that we are good at. I guarantee that there is a non-profit organization that could use your help, whether it is with designing their website or painting the conference room of their new office building. If you offer of yourself and your services freely, you can most likely ask for, and get a link to your website from theirs.

Submit Your Site To Local & Industry Specific Online Business Directories

Anyone studying SEO can usually find a blog post about submitting your website to directories on the Internet. Yes, this is a valuable link building tactic, but before you go crazy and start submitting to thousands of directories, seek out local directories and directories that are specific to your business. Submit to these first and take your time filling out all of the information that they ask for. These will be some of your most valuable links since they are so relevant to your website and business.

Social Bookmarking

You have probably heard the term social bookmarking. You have probably heard that social bookmarking is a great way to build links. Well, it is and it isn’t… You can waste a lot of time social bookmarking if you are submitting to the wrong sites. I limit my social bookmarking to Mixx, Propeller and sometimes Kirtsy. The trick to social bookmarking is to not only bookmark your website, your blog posts, and other things related to your website, but bookmarking lots of different things that interest you. This will make your bookmarking profiles look much more natural to both viewers and the search engines.

Write An Article And Submit To Article Directories

Writing articles and submitting them to sites like Ezine Articles, Article City, and Go Articles, also known as article marketing, is a great way to get links back to your website. Take time to write a very detailed article about your industry and submit it to a few article directories like the ones I listed above. You will get links back to your website by properly using the author resource or bio box at the end of the article. You should tell a little about yourself and your company, while adding keyword rich anchor text links pointing back to your website.

Write And Submit A Press Release

Writing press releases and submitting them to places like PR Web or Web Wire is a great way to generate interest and buzz about your business and also to get links back to your website. This method of link building is a little more difficult than other links that you can get for your website. Writing a press release takes skill… a skill, which the average person, like me, does not have. Press releases have certain requirements that must be met, a certain format that must be followed, and in most cases, need to be super interesting. Not having any of these elements can almost guarantee that your press release will either be outright rejected or not distributed to other news related websites.

Build A Hub Page Or Squidoo Lens

Building a Hub Page or Squidoo Lens is a fun way to get links back to your website. To date, I have built 73 Hubs and 25 Lenses for my own personal websites and hundreds for clients that I have managed. The most effective Hub Pages and Squidoo Lenses are those that have at least 450 words of text about a certain topic or subject, videos, pictures, polls, and other gadgets that are easy to add. You want to make the page as interactive as possible so it provides value for anyone who happens to read it. You are allowed two links to other websites from your Hubs and a handful of links (be conservative, don’t spam) from your Lenses.

Building links isn’t pretty. But, in order to rank well in the search engines, it is absolutely necessary. These are ten excellent ways for new companies or new website owners to start building links to their websites. There are many others and I encourage any of our readers to add to this list by commenting on this post.

Web designers and developers are continually gaining new tools to facilitate effective website creation. Compatibility, usability, interaction, visual appeal, and support for a website’s users are all important aspects for a designer or developer to consider when looking to present the most interesting and user-friendly site possible. By implementing these simple suggestions, you can dramatically improve your users’ experience and the overall performance of your site.

1. Optimize the search function on your website or blog to make it easy for your users to find the information or media that they are looking for. Tag everything from articles to pictures and videos so that all of the content on your website is searchable. You want your users to spend a lot of time on your website, but you don’t want that time to be spent digging around for information that should be readily available.

2. Include links to all of your social network profiles on your homepage. Visitors who are genuinely interested in you or your business should be able to easily connect with you via social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. By including these links, your users can get more involved in learning about your company and will get the feeling that there are real, compassionate people behind your website.

3. Create landing pages that direct users to the content that is most relevant to them. Landing pages are convenient for your users because they can cut down on the time it takes for them to navigate through your website. Landing pages can dramatically improve conversions from website visitors to leads by providing users with a direct path to the page or form you are hoping they will use.

4. Optimize your website for the iPhone and other mobile devices by creating a version of your site that is readable and usable on the popular mobile browsers. Make sure that all text and media is formatted correctly for the smaller screen size and that your website’s style stays intact. Media Contour has an informative iPhone tutorial to get you started with making your website mobile-friendly.

5. Incorporate a text-to-speech application like Odiogo that allows your users to listen to an audio version of your website’s content. This is especially useful for users who are blind, illiterate, too busy to read, or simply lazy. Many people do not want to devote their time to reading a long blog article—by listening to it, they can browse through other sites or multi-task in other ways while they are enjoying your words of wisdom. Media Contour has implemented this application so that you can try it out for yourself—just click the “listen now” button above this or any other KaBlog! article.

6. Create text alternatives or captions to describe the content for all of your website’s media (images, music, video, etc.). This text alternative ensures that blind individuals can understand what a picture or photograph is portraying. Similarly, it also allows your hearing-impaired visitors to understand what is being played within an audio file.

7. Allow your users to navigate your site using keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts can save time and prevent early onset of carpal tunnel syndrome. Many users prefer not to use a mouse and some are unable to do so. By installing keyboard shortcut compatibility, you will ensure that your website is usable for the widest range of visitors.

8. Provide your website’s users with helpful tools like an automatic spell checker, help or FAQ section, and bookmarking buttons. The Help and FAQ pages can save time for your users when they encounter a problem or an error on your site or when they have a specific question. The bookmarking buttons help users to easily remember and share your website within their network of friends, family, and professionals.

Tips specifically for e-commerce websites:

9. Provide an option for one-click checkout on every page so that users to do not have to spend time going back and forth between pages, potentially losing interest in purchasing your product or service as they waste more time navigating.

10. Include testimonials on your homepage, products page, or portfolio section that give your business a good reputation and help prospective customers gain trust and respect for your company’s products or services. You want to be able to choose which reviews your users see—without testimonials on your site, you will force your customers to look elsewhere for reviews of your business. These reviews, unlike the testimonials on your site, cannot be moderated by you.

While these suggestions are not appropriate for every website, they can be very valuable for a designer or developer looking to improve usability on multiple levels. By optimizing your site for many diverse types of users with their own preferences, tendencies, and handicaps, you can increase traffic to your site and raise the standards by which designers and developers create their own works. The Internet is for all to enjoy—you should make your visitors’ experience as pleasant and pain-free as possible.
